Install a Y-Axis F8 Lead Screw on the Zen Toolworks 7×12 CNC Router

I’ve gone over installing the X-axis and Z-axis F8 lead screws, so now lets check out how to install the Y-axis F8 screw.  One could tear a whole machine up to do this, but after a little thought, the method I used made this lead screw install the easiest of the three.  Check out the video below for most of the steps, explanation to follow.  If you just want to see how fast my ZTW 7×12 is with upgraded X, Y, and Z axes, just skip to 0:32 (original test video at the end for comparison).

To explain the video, in the beginning you’ll need to loosen the set screws on both the driving motor and the collar holding the other side on the bearing.  Remove the circular piece that holds the bearing opposite the Y-axis servo motor.  Once this is done, just roll the lead screw out.  If you have a hand drill available, tighten it down on the end of the screw and reverse everything out. this will speed things up considerably.  After this is out, Read more »

Orgainize your Garage with the FastTrack Rail System

Add some pegboard behind your worktable and you're good to go with the wire racks!

With all the stuff I make shown on this site, three surfboards, a mountain bike, milling machine, and CNC router, one might assume that I have a gigantic garage or basement.  Although that would be nice, our house has a two car garage that we generally park two cars (a car and a truck) inside and no basement.  The one advantage that I do have over many medium-sized garages is that the ceiling is very high at 11 1/2 feet.

With this garage height advantage, pretty much all my other tools and gear is stored on the walls using the “Fastrack” garage orgainization system from Rubbermaid.  The above link is for an 8 piece kit from Amazon, but if you look at the “also bought” section, everything you need should be there.  The big exception would be my surfboards, where I instead used this triple rack, although this quad-rack from rack by Surfdogz looks like it might be even better.  I would think racks like this would also work nicely with Read more »

Swapping the Z-axis for a “fast 8s” lead screw

As of now, the stock screws on the ZTW 7×12 kit aren’t particularly fast, but there is an upgrade involving a new “F8” leadscrew that I’ve done for the X-axis (my article about it) that makes the router travel 6.4 times faster – seriously.  This video should explain what is involved when making the upgrade, but I’ve jotted down some notes afterwards.

As seen in the video, you’ll have to take the bottom support apart and detach both the guide rods and the original lead screw.  Once this is done, Read more »
