How an Optical Drive Reader Works

Here’s another piece of my former HTPC, the optical drive.  This didn’t look as pretty inside as the hard drive, so it met a different fate than being placed above my workbench.

So I suppose that doesn’t really answer how the drive works in general, but it appears that a motor turns a screw and then things are translated into linear motion for the reader.  Obviously things get screwed up when hit with a hammer.  As always, don’t try this at home.
